Educational system

Due to its tradition as a classical grammar school, all our fifth formers start with Latin as a first foreign language, but when they enrol, they choose one of three educational branches:

- the classical one with lessons in Ancient Greek and Latin
- the musical one with emphasis on arts
- and the language branch with emphasis on modern languages (French or Italian) with Latin as a basis.

In all three branches sciences in general and computing in particular have their due place.

History

The foundation of Celtis Grammar (Gymnasium) School goes back to the 14th century , when it started as a school of Latin.
In 1634 it was officially given the status of a Grammar School.

Location

Celtis Grammar School is situated near the city centre of Schweinfurt, a town right in the middle of Germany not too far away from Frankfurt am Main and Nürnberg.
Schweinfurt itself is an industrial town famous mainly for its factories of car parts.
It counts a population of some 54 000 inhabitants.
The surrounding scenery is agricultural with vineyards of the high quality Franconian wine.

Facilities

As we are generously supported by our district council, our facilities are excellent and constantly brought up to standard. We especially value our computer rooms, an internet cafe and a bistro where lunch is served by an excellent caterer.

Catchment area

Our school is a district school as far as the catchment area is concerned and it is financed by the district council of Schweinfurt.
It provides education for about 970 students who start as fifth formers and do their final A-level exams (Abitur) after nine respectively eight years in the future.

Extracurricular activities

Our school provides a fill of extracurricular activities e. g.:

We are proud of our prize winning Celtis Big Band which has toured China, Greece, France and Italy.

Individual musicians regularly win prizes in nation-wide competitions.

Our drama group has had many highlights with productions that have been shown all over Bavaria.

Our rowing teams join the nation-wide races in Berlin every year.

We organise school skiing trips for all our sevenths in the Austrian Alps during school time.

To develop a school community spirit our fifth forms go to country hostels (all the teaching takes place there) for a week at the beginning of their first year at our school.

We attach great importance to exchange programs with our partner schools in Italy, France, Turkey and Romania and as a future ambition Great Britain. We send the 10th forms as a whole class.

Many of our students spend a school year abroad, mainly in English speaking countries.
We regularly welcome students from all over the world who attend our school for a year.

The Celtis Foundation

In order to maintain our high standards even in financially difficult times a foundation was established in 2003 and it has become a great success.
